What is a Guild?

Guild is defined as a group of people who have joined together in pursuit of a common interest. The earliest guilds were for religious purposes as burial societies and offering financial support. In the later Middle Ages, they became organizations to support various trades and crafts.

In a traditional massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG), a guild is a group of players who are working toward a common goal in a game. Guilds can be large or small, and they may consist of players who know each other outside the game or players from many different geographic areas. These groups band together to defeat challenges in the game that require several players to complete and to socialize and connect with other players.

In the web3 world, a guild can be a DAO. The Play-to-Earn Yield Guild Games (YGG) received $4.6M investment led by venture capital (VC) firm Andreessen Horowitz (a16z). YGG lends players the money to buy the Axies and other digital assets to start the game so they can start earning money. YGG is an ERC-20 token that gives holders the right to participate in the governance of the YGG DAO. It has a total supply of 1 billion tokens, and 25 million YGG was sold via an Initial DEX Offering (IDO) on SushiSwap in 2021. A guild with token is more sustainable than traditional game guilds.
